I'm looking forward to my third year of completing the Hunger Challenge -- each one has been an educational experience that has helped me (and hopefully my readers) become more aware of the challenges so many people have in this economy and in this country.

I feel like I can't do enough to support the SF and Alameda County food banks as well as food banks nationwide.

This will be my first year doing the Hunger Challenge. I look forward to the experience. My hopes going into it is to have an open mind and to have empathy for the realities of those truly experiencing the hunger challenge.

This is going to be my first year doing the Hunger Challenge. I'm already kind of nervous and trying to imagine what I will eat to stick to the $4. I can't imagine doing this every day. I hope I can stick to my blogging regimen too!

Hang in there, Dana! It's definitely a challenge as the week wears on. The first couple of days, it doesn't seem so bad, but by day 5...ugh! Imagine what it's like when EVERY day is the Hunger Challenge!

Does one have to be a resident of CA to join in? I'd love to participate and tweet about it, but I'm all the way over in Oklahoma.

Anyone can participate! The number $4.72 is an average for food stamps in CA but you could look up the average in Oklahoma...

Yes, Amy, you are welcome to participate! We've had people join the Challenge from all over the US - and even from foreign countries. The cost of living in San Francisco is higher, so you might consider using a lower number in Oklahoma. We look forward to having you join us!

I'm in. And I'm particularly interested in how other people do this with children. Thank you so much, SF Food Bank.

Found this site with info on average food stamp per participant for each state. The California figure works out to about, though not quite, the Hunger Challenge's $33.04/week (I divided the number by 4.33).

This may be helpful to anyone not in CA to begin to figure an amount to use for the Challenge: http://www.statehealthfacts.org/profileind.jsp?rgn=1&cat=1&ind=26

Thanks for your comments, Apotheca - and welcome to the Challenge! You might check out this blog post from a past HC participant who used it as a learning opportunity for her kids: http://bit.ly/pmeBAg

Thanks also to Anonymous, for the stats on food stamp amounts throughout the U.S. Cost of living in various areas can definitly make a difference. Here in San Francisco, we have one of the highest costs of living in the country. That really impacts the amount people have left to spend on food.
